People often dismiss faith as something that only the simple-minded believe in. But the truth is, throughout history, some of the world’s greatest minds have embraced faith, including scientists, philosophers, and artists.
What evidence convinced these brilliant people to believe in something that cannot be seen or touched? Here are a few examples:
Blaise Pascal (1623-1662):
Pascal was a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer, and Catholic philosopher. He is best known for his work on probability and calculus. Pascal argued that the existence of God is the most rational explanation for the order and complexity of the universe.
Isaac Newton (1643-1727)
Newton was an English physicist and mathematician who is widely recognized as one of the most influential scientists of all time. He is best known for his work on gravity and motion. Newton believed that the existence of God was essential to explaining the laws of nature.
C.S. Lewis (1898-1963)
Lewis was a British novelist, poet, essayist, literary critic, and Christian apologist. He is best known for his work on the Narnia series and his book Mere Christianity. Lewis argued that the moral law is evidence of the existence of God.
William Lane Craig (born 1949)
Craig is an American Christian philosopher, theologian, apologist, and public intellectual. He is the author or editor of over thirty books on philosophy and religion. Craig has argued that the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most convincing evidence for the existence of God.
These are just a few examples of the many brilliant people who have been convinced of the existence of God by evidence. While faith is ultimately a matter of personal conviction, the evidence presented by these individuals is certainly worth considering.
Other reasons why faith is a rational choice:
- The universe is fine-tuned for life. The laws of physics and the constants of nature are precisely calibrated to allow for the existence of life. This suggests that the universe was designed by someone who intended for it to be inhabited.
- Human beings have a moral sense. We have a built-in sense of right and wrong, even if we don’t always act on it. This moral sense suggests that there is a moral lawgiver who has created us with a sense of right and wrong.
- Human beings have a spiritual dimension. We have a longing for something beyond ourselves. This spiritual longing suggests that there is a spiritual reality to our existence.
Of course, there is also evidence that challenges faith. But the evidence in favor of faith is compelling, and it has convinced some of the world’s greatest minds.
